June O. Hansen is a Senior Corps volunteer who helps make a difference in the lives of others every day. June is a long-time volunteer who is contributing 375 hours annually, working in many different roles at Providence Health System facilities. June is a breast cancer survivor who donates her time to talk with newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. As a matter of fact, June is so dedicated to this project that she recruited eleven of her friends to form a breast cancer volunteer group. These volunteers maintain a library in their office at the Providence Pavilion for Women and Children, with materials to lend as well as free information to distribute to breast cancer patients. This program was begun in May of 2003, and is growing toward the goal of contacting all patients interested in information and support. June also volunteers in the Volunteer Services office, where she compiles monthly reports for volunteer hours, flower deliveries and activities for three hospital campuses. For a change of pace, one morning each month June works in the hospital gift shop, helping customers find just the right item to help cheer an ailing friend or relative. As a member of the Providence Volunteer Advisory Council, which meets monthly, June contributes the input of a very experienced and dedicated volunteer. In her spare time, (June confides that she saves Monday, Thursday and Friday for family and friends) she is helping her husband and family plan their 60th wedding anniversary celebration for August! As her 80th birthday approaches in May, June scarcely has time to
slow down for it. An inspiration to us all, June has two recommendations: “constant learning,” and “giving of yourself to others.” June says that volunteering “makes me feel good.” Knowing about RSVP volunteers like June O. Hansen makes us all feel good! |
